Bug ID: 401943
Summary: Kmail uses excessive CPU resources, heating up
computer
Product: kmail2
Version: unspecified
Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: kdepim-***@kde.org
Reporter: ***@kde.org
Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

When I start Kmail, the fan starts spinning madly and seems to use up too many
resources on the CPU.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start Kmail

OBSERVED RESULT
Fan starts spinning excessively and does not stop until Kmail is closed. top
shows Kmail as the most resource-hungry process.

EXPECTED RESULT

None of the above.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Kmail: 5.9.3
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.52.0
Qt Version: 5.11.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Here is the output from top:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
1389 paul 20 5718600 299452 186100 R 100.3 2.5 13:56.63
/usr/bin/kontact

The computer I am using is a modern HP Envy and is powerful enough to run much
more resource-hungry software without getting too hot.

It is not Akonadi, since stopping, starting, fscking and vacuuming do not have
any observable effects. It is not any of the other Kontact components: I have
started them all separately and none has the same effect as Kmail.
