In 18.07.80 there is a new button "Mark as read" in new mail notifications.
Clicking on this button doesn't have any effect.

I'm on KDE Neon and there is even no button for me. Click on the notification
also does nothing (is it supposed to open Kmail?).

You need to enable them in the new mail notifier plugin settings.
